I adore documenting families and with this session I was so happy to document real, raw and timeless moments.
Most family sessions I start with the classic family portrait, you know, the smile and look at the camera one. This is a popular shot and in my opinion an important one to have in your set of images. However, as soon as that shot is done (it takes about 2 minutes to get everyone in position and snap away) then I always say to my clients “now we can play, and anything we get now will be a bonus and awesome”
The Raath Family was an absolute treat to photograph and the perfect subjects to have in front of my lens. It was fun and it made me think a bit more why it worked so well. I’ve put together a few pointers for future clients at the end of this blog post. Maybe these tips will help to get from that standard family portrait to something that will take your breath away.
So let me show you how we got from this:
Here are some tips to get these care free, real and timeless moments with your loved ones.
- Play – yes, dance, hug, run, swing. The kids love it, the parents forget a bit about what they look like and in that moment that nobody is camera aware, the magic happens
- Don’t worry about your hair / chin / teeth / bum / your outfit / that pimple – seriously, it’s obviously in my best interest to make sure I get your best angle. So let me do it.
- Don’t look at the camera, unless I ask you to
- If you don’t know where to look, focus on your loved ones. Look at them, take in that moment, appreciate the love of these wonderful people in your life. I promise you, nothing photographs as well as real love.
